What's
New?
(Updated fairly regularly!
All old news cleaned out on a regular basis!)
Thursday,
June 24th: 12:30pm Voodoo 2 + Voodoo
3 Generic Mac Drivers!
3DFX
has come through for Mac gamers, in a **big way**. In
a few weeks we'll be seeing generic Mac Voodoo 2 AND
Voodoo 3 drivers - allowing any Mac gamer to pick up
a lower-cost PC video card and installing it in their
Mac.
The days of Mac-specific, over-priced Voodoo cards
are numbered.
OpenGL support for Macs and these generic Voodoo drivers
is being handled through the popular Mesa Drivers (many
of us are using to let us play the Q3
Test on our Voodoo1/Voodoo2-equipped machines).

Tuesday,
June 15th: 4:30pm Redneck Rampage
for Mac
Logicware's
sayin' that a Mac-friendly demo of Redneck Rampage is
on the horizon, maybe a few weeks away. Apparently the
current PC demo of redneck Rampage was made with a Beta
version of the game...the Mac demo will contain all
new code (i.e. not a Beta) and thus the extra time it's
taking to make a Mac demo.
Tuesday,
June 15th: 5:00pm Unreal Tournament
Mission Pak Goes *GOLD*
If you enjoyed
the Single-Player aspect of Unreal, then you'll want
to keep a close eye on the progress of the official
Unreal Mission Pack, by Legend
Entertainment.

Friday,
June 5th: 8:30pm VedderPak1 - A
Q3 Mod
MacQuaker
Vedder has it goin' on...his own web domain, his own
terrific collection of Quake 1 maps, and now this: a
MOD conversion for the Q3 Test that makes it *better*
(Editor's Note: Jury's still out on
*my* opinion of VedderPak1...I just got the damn thing!)
Among other improvements to Q3, VedderPak1 does the
following: changes the HUD display's numbers; improved
crosshair; new translucent console graphic. Basically,
lost of little cosmetic changes.

Friday,
June 5th: 12:00noon QUAKE 3 Test
Bots **Demos**!
I've mirrored
two demos of the Q3 Test Bots in action, and you can
grab
the file you need here. (600k -
instructions on how to view the 2 demos included with
the file)
These demos were recorded by james@grindale.demon.co.uk
but I may in fact just take some time
this evening and try recording my *own* demos of the
Bots in action. Why steal everyone else's stuff when
I can do it myself, as they say.

PC USERS:
(1) Download
the "Q3Bots.zip"
(16k) file. I have scanned this
thoroughly with Norton Anti-Virus, just so you know.
(2) Extract the .zip file and inside the folder is the
instructions and an .exe file called "q3tbots.exe".
(3) Copy the file "q3tbots.exe" to your Q3Test
folder. Make sure you rename the folder "demoq3"
inside to "baseq3" or this won't work.
(4) After running the "q3tbots.exe" you will
have a back-up file called "qagamex86.bak"
inside your "Q3Folder".
(5) Start up the Q3 test. Drop your console and type
"nav gen" to generate the navigation points
for the Bots to travel on. This process TAKES TIME.
Like maybe 5 minutes, depending on the speed of your
PC.
(6) When it's finished, you will probably get an error
that says "RE_RegisterModel: models/objects/dmspot.md3
not found". Doesn't appear to 'cause any problems.
(7) Now all you have to do is spawn a Bot/Bots to fight
against. Drop your console again and type "bot
spawn <botname>". The names of the Bots,
in ascending order of difficulty are:
Brandonbot
Timbot
Paulbot
Xianbot
So, you could type "bot spawn Brandonbot"
and Brandonbot would appear...to kick yer ass! Yer done!
Finally, the text file that comes with the patch says
that you might need to type "nav gen" every
time you want to play against bots. NOT TRUE! Do it
once to both maps, and yer all set. You will still get
the same error "RE_RegisterModel: models/objects/dmspot.md3
not found" when the map starts up, but it will
work.

Q3
Center
Part
of the MGO gaming network, the Q3 Center web site
features one-stop clicking for all things Quake
3: Arena (and the game hasn't even been *released*
yet!)
I really dig the web site's futuristic console interface,
unfortunately the rest of the site doesn't make
any real use of it. It always stays the same.
When Quake 3:
Arena is finally released (this Fall?) you can
bet that the Q3 Center will be a Number One Stop
for MODS, patches and cool stuff. |

Scary's
Shuga Shack
I
pay a visit at least 5 times a day. You should too.
Not a particularly stunning site in visuals, the
Shugashack makes up for it with the most updates,
the most news, the most attention to the gaming
industry I've ever seen on a 'personal' web site.
Great site. |

every great 3D First-person Shooter is a Planet

on any given day, I'm a regular to one of the above
'Planet' sites. |

Thresh's
Firing Squad
Thresh
(a.k.a. Dennis Fong) became famous by beating
John Carmack at this own game, literally: he defeated
John at the Red Annihilation Tournament in 1997
(a professional player Quake tournee) and claimed
as his prize Carmack's shiny, red Ferrari.
Now he's off the competitive circuit, but those
who are in the know, visit the Firing Squad, simply
because through notoriety alone his web site covers
The Big Games before they happen.
He's a shade biased for id Software (the hand
that feeds him, maybe?) and his perspective is
always from the professional gamer standpoint,
but nonetheless he's doing what I only wish I
could - play and review computer games for a living.

JVOX's
Boomstick
I
hate to be corny, but JVOX Rox. And he's a mighty
nice guy, and a good opponent in Quake ;)
Unfortunately, his life's busier these days, and
we're now left with "Boomstick Lite",
a scaled-down version of his impressive site.
Still a must-see for MacGamerz. |

MacQuake
TACTICS network
Really,
there's information here for *any* Quake player,
Mac or PC, or otherwise.
Lamerz need not apply. Everything from the best
weapons in the best situations, to rocket jumping,
"The Pineapple Ambush", and all tactics
in between are covered on the MQTN. |
 |
MacQuake
Infinity
I'm
not big on the site's new Flash interface (too much
of two colors) but there's a wealth of information
here for the serious MacQuake gamer.
I don't play MacQuake much anymore (in fact, I don't
even *see* my Mac much anymore) but without dedicated
fan sites like this one from the guys at MacQuake
Infinity, the MacGaming community would be nothing....thus,
the mention. |

Quakeitecture
Mapaholics
Anonymous, Prefabs, Entities and the Quiver
FAQ...yeah...just about everything you could possibly
need to know about Map Making in the Quake environment.
Sidebar: I wouldn't even be terribly surprised if
Quiver suddenly supported Quake
3: Arena someday soon...and you can bet www.quakeitecture.com
would be a big part of the experience. |
